Ability Media Limited has grown from the successful NE Ability website, and with the support of Mr Tony Blair - the Prime Minister, Ability Media aims to provide a central resource for disability related information, services and products. The UK Ability Portal aims to provide a starting point for people with disabilities, their supporters and communities to access a diverse range of information and other resources concerning disability, social inclusion and the promotion of equal opportunities for all.
The idea for Ability Media came about as a result of a great deal of personal experience. A broad understanding of many of the issues affecting people with disabilities today, and the need for easily accessible relevant information. Working with Regional Government and a number of groups representing people with a disability, Ability Media has developed a network of contacts and supporters, who are able positively to influence and direct both the content and future development of the portal and its objectives.
Ability Media will embrace both local and national initiatives, we practice a positive approach to employing people with disabilities to undertake the work associated with our objectives, and will seek to ensure our users are able to achieve as high a degree of ownership in the project as is possible.
The Internet contains much valuable information, however managing the volume and quality of information is sometimes difficult. Undertaking a search will often prove a time consuming and unproductive exercise. The UK Ability website aims to help users overcome this by providing a single site for access to information on employment, new technologies and leisure, relevant to people with disabilities and to their supporters, plus provide the contact details for thousands of disability related groups and support services.
The Ability Media team also works closely with many consultants who can provide specialist skills on a project-by-project basis relating to a range of issues including disability access audits and web based access in relation to the Disability Discrimination Act.
To help us develop meaningful accessibility for users we are eager to find users with disabilities who use assistive technologies such as screen readers to test our websites and others submitted to us for ‘hands-on’ testing. Please contact us if you’d like to join our user panel.
If you require any further information on any of these services please do not hesitate to contact us.
